Embracing the Power of Communities: A Personal Transformation

*This blog was first written in 2021*

The realisation that communities play a crucial role in our growth and well-being struck me when I, an 18-year-old seeking a fresh start, found myself alone in Sydney, Australia. Unlike most international students or travelers, I had no connections and no plan in place. Before relocating, I battled with a deep sense of hopelessness and struggled to find motivation even for basic tasks like brushing my teeth. It was more than just teenage hormones; I was silently battling depression. In a desperate attempt to escape my despair, I decided to leave my country, hoping that a one-way ticket across the globe would heal the overwhelming despair, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia.

However, stepping off the plane didn't bring the rush of excitement one experiences on a vacation. Instead, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and regret, realizing that my decision was driven by emotion, not true resolution. I felt lost, with little to no support emotionally, financially, or socially.

Humans naturally seek comfort in familiar settings where they feel a sense of belonging. For me, that was high school—the world I had known for most of my life. However, this was the first time I lacked that sense of belonging, and it made me realize the vital role communities play in our lives, helping us thrive.

After a few challenging weeks in Sydney, I managed to secure an au-pair role that provided some stability in terms of food, shelter, and money. Yet, despite these material securities, I still felt empty. I struggled to see a brighter future, plagued by negative thoughts. It became evident that true fulfillment required more than just material possessions; it necessitated a sense of belonging, being heard, and taking up space.

In my search for people who shared similar experiences and aspirations, individuals eager to interact, be social, and conquer their fears, I stumbled upon a YouTube channel called 'Yes Theory.' The community known as the 'Yes Fam' held the answer I had been seeking all along. Embracing a mission of saying 'yes' to life-changing experiences and stepping outside comfort zones, much like I had done by moving overseas, I finally found a community where I belonged and could thrive. Within days, I connected with like-minded strangers, said 'yes' to extraordinary experiences like skydiving, and felt I was moving forward in life.

But the question remained: how did this community change my life overnight? A community is not just a group of people; it is an active force that fosters advocacy, support, and personal growth by encouraging individuals to think beyond themselves. It offers a sense of belonging to those who feel alone, just like I did. The reason communities like 'Yes Fam' can transform lives rapidly lies in the fundamental benefits they offer: support, influence, sharing, and acceptance.

While I had financial support, I lacked the emotional, social, and sense of belonging that every human craves, which the 'Yes Fam' provided instantly upon integration. It not only allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who offered personal support but also enabled me to support others and make a positive impact in their lives. Engaging in this community empowered me, made me feel valued, heard, and strong—emotions I lacked before joining.

As I embraced this community, it empowered me to grow and develop, breaking free from the shackles of self-doubt. The 'Yes Fam' gave me a sense of purpose, a reason to thrive, and I firmly believe it can do the same for anyone willing to embrace the power of communities.
